Când lumina albă (care conține toate culorile spectrului) trece prin atmosferă, undele de lumină albastră sunt împrăștiate mai mult decât celelalte culori, deoarece au lungimi de undă mai scurte. Acest fenomen se numește împrăștierea Rayleigh.
