A Paris appeals court has ordered the release of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy from prison and placed him under judicial supervision.

Sarkozy is expected to be freed on November 10, less than three weeks after he began serving a five-year sentence for accepting illegal Libyan funding during his 2007 presidential campaign.
He was acquitted of all other charges, including corruption and receiving illegal campaign financing.

Under the court’s ruling, Sarkozy will be banned from leaving the country as he awaits a new appeal trial.

The 70-year-old, who served as president from 2007 to 2012, became the first French head of state since World War II to be jailed when he was convicted on September 25 and imprisoned on October 21 before seeking early release.
