China just approved its first flying taxis for commercial passenger service.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) granted air operator certificates to EHang Holdings in Guangdong and its subsidiary Heyi Aviation in Hefei. This final regulatory step now allows them to run autonomous passenger drone flights.

The certified two-seater flying taxis will start with short tourism routes and later expand. While the aircraft fly without pilots, the companies must meet strict safety and maintenance standards.

The two-seat air taxi has eight arms with 16 propellers. It can fly up to 81 mph (130 km/h), cruise at 62 mph (100 km/h), and reach 9,843 feet (3,000 meters).

It can fly for 22 miles (35 km) or 21 minutes on a full battery, which takes about two hours to recharge. It can carry up to 485 pounds (220 kg) and comes with gull-wing doors and fixed landing gear.
