Reflection: The Simplicity of an Islamic Burial — A Lesson from the Passing of Muhammad Buhari
In a time where death is often turned into a social event, political noise has made us overlook the profound Islamic lessons in the recent burial of a former leader. Despite his status as a three-time Head of State, the funeral was marked by the dignity and simplicity taught by Islam.

Let us reflect:

The body was not preserved in a morgue for months or years—burial was swift, as prescribed by the Sunnah.
No elaborate burial committee—just the family and those responsible fulfilled the obligation.
No aso-ebi or uniform attire—because death is a reminder of equality, not a fashion parade.
No feasting and partying in the name of condolence—true mourning in Islam avoids extravagance.
No musical concerts or entertainers—instead, remembrance of Allah should fill such gatherings.
No wake-keep—the night is for rest and prayers, not for rituals unknown to Islam.
No ‘Night of Tributes’—our deeds speak for us before Allah, not speeches and eulogies.
No parade of in-laws or extended social ceremonies—death is personal and spiritual.
No all-night immoral dance or shameful displays—chastity and modesty are Islamic values.
No golden or luxurious coffin—a simple shroud and burial in the earth suffices.
No paid pallbearers—carried by Muslims seeking reward from Allah.
No Master of Ceremony (MC)—it’s not a show, it’s a reminder of the Hereafter.
No spraying of naira or dollars—wastefulness is condemned in Islam.
No cow slaughtered or rice distributed—feeding the poor is encouraged, but not as a ritual tied to death.
No giveaways or souvenir sharing—rather, charity on behalf of the deceased is more beneficial.
No alcohol or beer served—purity is maintained in Islamic rites.
No luxury drinks or worldly display—the real honor lies in piety.
No tents and 5,000 chairs to impress—because the grave accepts neither rank nor riches.
🕌 Indeed, the burial followed the path of the Prophet ﷺ — with humility, speed, and submission to the will of Allah.

“Every soul shall taste death…” (Qur’an 3:185)

Let this be a reminder to us all: Simplicity in death is not a sign of poverty, but of understanding the purpose of life.
