California has passed the nation’s first law to phase out ultraprocessed foods from school meals. Signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, the law requires the state to define which foods are considered “ultraprocessed” by 2028, with schools expected to eliminate them by 2035. Supporters say it’s a major step toward improving student health, while critics warn the law could raise food costs for districts already struggling with tight budgets.
