A new investigation by Human Rights Watch and Cristosal found that Venezuelan migrants sent by the US government to El Salvador’s “mega-prison” were subjected to torture, sexual abuse, and inhumane detention.

While the Trump administration claimed they were gang members, researchers found that only 3 percent had a criminal record and that some were asylum seekers. Detainees also reported overcrowding, scarce food, poor sanitation, almost no medical care, and no access to recreation or education.

“The Trump administration paid El Salvador millions of dollars to arbitrarily detain Venezuelans who were then abused by Salvadoran security forces on a near-daily basis,” said Juanita Goebertus, Americas director at Human Rights Watch. “The Trump administration is complicit in torture, enforced disappearance, and other grave violations.”
