The U.S. Army confirmed that a National Guard sergeant first class—who is not a pilot—successfully flew real missions with a full-size Black Hawk helicopter using only a tablet.

The Sikorsky Black Hawk, equipped with Lockheed Martin’s MATRIX autonomy system, flew autonomously over a 70-nautical-mile route to perform cargo deliveries, precision parachute drops, external sling-load lifts, and a simulated medical evacuation.

One of the missions included lifting a 2,900-pound water tank while hovering and conducting a patient transfer exercise with another helicopter.

The soldier learned to operate the autonomous system in under an hour.

The demonstration showed how autonomous Black Hawks can reduce risk, extend missions, and let non-pilots safely operate advanced military helicopters.
