OLYMPIC POLICY UPDATE 🏅
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced a new eligibility policy for women’s events that will take effect starting with the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
Under the new rules, transgender women are now banned from competing in women’s Olympic events. The move aligns with an executive order from Donald Trump pushing for stricter rules around transgender participation in women’s sports ahead of the 2028 Olympics.
“Eligibility for any female category event at the Olympic Games or any other IOC event… is now limited to biological females,” the IOC stated, adding that this will be determined through a one-time gene test during an athlete’s career.
The IOC says the policy is intended to “protect fairness, safety and integrity in the female category,” and clarified that it is not retroactive and does not apply to grassroots or recreational sports. The Olympic Charter also continues to state that access to sport is a human right.
IOC President Kirsty Coventry addressed the decision, saying, “At the Olympic Games, even the smallest margins can be the difference between victory and defeat… it would not be fair for biological males to compete in the female category.”
