🔬 A study published today in the journal Science documents something unprecedented: the Ngogo chimpanzee community in Uganda's Kibale National Park, the largest ever studied with about 200 individuals, split into two factions and erupted into lethal war. Scientists estimate this happens only once every 500 years.

🧩 What makes it extraordinary: this isn't a conflict between rival groups. It's a war between former companions. Chimps that groomed together, hunted together, and patrolled their territory as one for decades suddenly became enemies. "These are chimps that once knew each other. They view each other as the enemy," said John Mitani, University of Michigan.

📅 The first signs appeared in 2015, when the "Central" and "Western" clusters stopped mingling. By 2018, the split was total: separate territories, no cross-mating. Then the killings began. The Western group launched coordinated raids on Central: 7 adult males and 19 infants killed.

🧬 Aaron Sandel, University of Texas, explained: "If chimps can do this without ethnicity, language, or religion, the things we attribute to human warfare, then it must be their social bonds. If that's the case with chimps, to what extent is it the case in humans?"
