Big Pun discovered Remy Ma freestyling in the Bronx and brought her to Fat Joe. When Pun died in 2000, Fat Joe signed her to Terror Squad and carried her career forward.
In 2008 she was sentenced to eight years in prison, serving six. The industry moved on. Deals dried up. Phones stopped ringing.
Fat Joe kept showing up.
He visited her regularly throughout her sentence, kept her name alive in interviews, and the moment she walked out, he was there. They went straight back to the studio and recorded Plata O Plomo together in 2017.
"Lean Back" went number one in 2004. "All the Way Up" went number one in 2016. Two number ones, twelve years apart, same two people.
The Bronx takes care of its own.
