He was more than a dog to the Marine who loved him. He was a brother, a protector, and the reason one man kept going.

Cena was a 10-year-old black Labrador who served with the United States Marines as a bomb-sniffing dog in Afghanistan.

He completed three tours.

For Marines on dangerous roads, dogs like Cena were not just animals. They walked ahead. They searched for explosives. They helped bring people home.

Cena was paired with Lance Cpl. Jeff DeYoung during combat in Afghanistan. Their bond was built in fear, dust, cold nights, and moments when they only had each other.

Jeff later said Cena kept him warm in the desert and comforted him after he lost seven friends in just three weeks.

After Cena retired in 2014, he became Jeff’s service dog. This time, his mission was different.

He helped Jeff live with PTSD.

Then came the news no one was ready for.

Cena was diagnosed with terminal bone cancer. Jeff knew his best friend was in pain, so he planned one last goodbye worthy of the life Cena had lived.

In Muskegon, Michigan, hundreds of people came out to honor him.

Cena took one final ride in a topless Jeep. People lined the streets. Veterans, police officers, firefighters, Marines, and families stood together to say goodbye.

At the USS LST 393 museum ship, Cena was dressed in a decorated Marine vest.

There was a final salute. Taps was played. His body was carried away in a flag-draped coffin.

For many, it was not just the goodbye of a dog.

It was the farewell of a Marine.

Jeff carried Cena in his arms, the way Cena had carried him through some of the hardest years of his life.
